History
Olde Tyme Grocery began in 1982. It was purchased as a grocery store with aisles of can goods, produce and five small carts. Mr. Perio, who had it approximately 25 years, previously owned the store. Mr. Caesar Martin owned it 25 years prior to that. Although it wasn’t fancy there were three things Glenn liked. It had character, a deli case, and a low price tag! After several months of extensive negotiations, they agreed on Glenn’s price. The sale happened on his birthday around 3 o’clock. He ran to the bank for change and was open for business by 5 o’clock!
Growing up in New Orleans, Glenn loved a good poorboy. He did not know anything about going into business for himself, but he did know that he wanted to make the best poorboy possible. Glenn was the only employee and he made approximately 20-25 poorboys per day. The store occupied one-third of the original building at that time.
Through years of hard work and lots of soul searching, Glenn learned the meaning of patience, perseverance, the ability to make changes when needed, and many other valuable lessons in life. It is through the support of his family, friends and former employees that Olde Tyme has reached the point where it is today - selling hundreds of poorboys daily. |
